We've begun planning the Malta trip. The plane tickets are in hand and we're busy figuring out transportation. I literally mean that the plane tickets are in hand which is really weird. When was the last time you had tickets mailed to your home? I've been using e-tickets for years and the weird thing is that I got the tickets off of Expedia, but they still mailed print tickets. Now I'm afraid of losing or forgetting them.
Anyway, the choices are taxi, which is prohibitively expensive, bus, which is really cheap but may not run where we want it to go, especially during the winter months, and renting a car. I must admit, renting a car in Crete and mainland Greece was the only way we were able to get to a lot of the best places we saw, so it is tempting…as long, of course, as I'm not the one who has to drive.
Once again, I think our focus will be ruins. Chris likes history in general and I like antiquity, so there is a lot for us to see both there and during an excursion up to Sicily. Gozo has some of the oldest ruins of human-made structures on the planet. I can't wait! There is just so much history on a few tiny islands.
Some guide books will be coming in a few days. After fairly successful trips to both Greece and London, I'm convinced that the trick is to do lots of research, drastically over-plan, and then choose from the list of possible sightseeing options at the beginning of each day.
All the research and planning is just part of the fun leading up to a trip. And I’m so lucky to have someone as wonderful as Chris to travel with. We really travel well together, and that's so important.
