Tell me more about " As late as 1869 there were areas of America where the holiday was forbidden." I'm reposting your quote on my web pages.

Scott

I heard a great article on NPR recently about this very thing. They spoke with a Jew who has written a book which discusses the 19th century war on Christmas by puritans who wanted rid of the holiday because it was traditionally celebrated by getting rip-roarin' drunk and exceptionally rowdy. And though the true history of Christmas in America was a tempting tid-bit to throw in the faces of the people claiming to be affronted by the current "War on Christmas", I was more moved by a woman who described herself as a devout Christian; a woman who believed it is more important for Christians to do good works, feed the hungry, house the poor, aid the huddled masses than it is to bicker over what to call a tree that doesn't grow in Bethlehem and is decorated by trinkets meant to keep evil spirits from escaping.
I constantly want to give in to my argumentative side and call one of the many talkshow hosts I can't stop myself from listening to and ask them who is warring on Christmas? Why haven't I seen or heard one guest on any show anywhere who hates Christmas? Where are these people? But I don't because usually I'm in my car, and I can't stand people who talk on their phones when they should be driving. Where's the war on that?
My suggestion is this, while all of those blowhards are out campaigning against this imaginary war, we should be doing something in the name of The Liberals. We should donate gifts, money, time something and make it clear it is from a die hard liberal who would rather someone get a meal than a sense of self-righteousness this holiday season. Let's buy angels for angel trees and sign them Bleeding Heart Liberal. Let's send gifts to Toys for Tots from Local Liberals. Let's ask why people are more concerned with Holiday Trees than Frist's abuse of the health care system this holday season. Let's ask why it's not okay to celebrate Kwanzaa but okay to cut Medicaid by more than half this holiday season. Let's ask why it's okay to kill a man for a misdeed but not forgive him though his victim wishes it so this holiday season.
Let's stop talking. Let's stop complaining. Let's stop accepting the accusations that we should wear proudly and let's act. Let's act. Let's get out there and find one thing we can do and let's act on it.

PS Please forgive typos and such, I'm exceptionally drunk...this holiday season.

War on Christmas

Chris

In 1950, North Korea sent a million men into South Korea in a surprise attack. Within minutes, Kim Il Sung sent out a press release saying that this was a counterattack and an act of self defense.

There is no war on Christmas, and the few who are saying there is do not believe it themselves. They are a radical fringe that wants to turn the U.S. into a "city of God." By declaring that they are defending themselves, they lend ligitimacy to all of their political pushes, like anti-abortion, creationism, prayer in school, public funding for religious schools and organizations, adoption of the ten commandments as a public doctrine, etc.

I completely agree with the above comment (not sure of his name). For a drunk, you make a lot of sense. I would just like to add one thing: It is time all the good Christians like the one he describes make themselves vocal and say "Enough! The radical right does not speak for all of us." They should be embarrassed that they are associated with people who, from a doctrinal standpoint, are no different than the radical muslims we are trying to kill (and who do not speak for Islam, either).

OK, that's my rant. I'm not drunk, but I'll take a look back at this when I am and see if I have anything to add. Oh, full disclosure - I am a pagan and a liberal, and proud of it. But I can't wait to spend Christmas with my sweetie, Jess.

If you haven't read or watched Keith Olbermann, you might want to since he discusses the man who started hyping the War on Christmas.
